Step Up Transformers, Making Electricity Cheap and Affordable to All

!: Step Up Transformers, Making Electricity Cheap and Affordable to All

Step up transformers have allowed electricity to reach many remotely located towns and villages in various countries all over the world. They have helped to keep the prices of electricity at affordable levels. Producing electricity with water or wind is not expensive; it is transporting it into far away places that raise the cost. It is cost negative to bring electricity into unpopulated areas because the people living there will never be able to pay the amount spent to bring it from miles away.

Many countries have bought used step up transformers and isolation transformers from the UK so they can bring electricity to remote areas of their most unpopulated lands. Step up transformers raise the voltage of the electricity they produce and lower the amperage on it so it is less resistant to heat and to travel. This makes it cheap to transport the electricity in high voltages which is later lowered to usable currents when it arrives at its destination. Many Latin American and African nations have had to buy used step up and isolation transformers to be able to take electricity at reasonable prices to isolated areas.

To be able to transport electricity into remote areas, these modest countries have found used equipment for sale in countries like the United States, the UK and Germany. The used equipment then gets taken back to their manufacturers where they have get fixed and have their oil changed along with other vital parts necessary for proper operation and use. The countries selling the used equipment typically contribute to the refurbishing process by assisting with the repair and transport costs of the transformers and electricity towers. This is typically done for nations that cannot afford the equipment without assistance. They sell the used equipment not to make a profit but as a charitable aid to less fortunate countries, without actually handing them everything.

Three phase transformers are also used in the process to lower the price of transporting electricity. These transformers produce electricity that flows at different speeds through the same wire but with different voltages and amperes. It is cheaper than normal 220 or 120 volt current as well because it is raw, it is not processed or steadied at a specific voltage. The electricity produced by these transformers is used to run electric motors, large and small. It is also used to run heavy machinery both in farms and in factories. Transformers and not raw electricity move the world, without them we would not have different voltages and different amperage and applications.

Step up transformers are the first step in the process of taking electricity to the masses which would not have it in any other way without it first being converted into what it is now. This is only one of their uses, there are many more in which transformers move machinery and equipment all over the world. It is not oil that moves the world we live in, it is electricity. Most of the electricity used around the world is generated with water, wind or the sun's energy.

Things to Know About a Power Transformer

!: Things to Know About a Power Transformer

Basically, a transformer is an electrical device designed to transfer alternating current or voltage from one electric circuit to another by means of electromagnetic induction. The transformer can be designed to step up or step down voltages. The transformers usually have a long and trouble free life since they do not involve any moving parts and is completely static solid state device and work under normal conditions.

The basic model or the simplest type of custom transformers consists of two or more coils of insulated wire wound on a laminated steel core. When voltage is induced to the primary coil, it magnetizes the iron core. In another coil called as the secondary coil the voltage is then induced. This is called as the output coil. The turn ratios of the primary and secondary coils determine the change of voltage between the two coils. They are capable of providing a whole range of voltage sources from the one input coil by using separate windings on the secondary side. Thus the transformers turn out to be the best method for supplying complete systems with all of their voltage requirements from one source.

If you are planning to buy a transformer, three factors should be considered prior to the purchase. You must determine primary voltage and frequency, the required secondary voltage and the capacity required in volt amperes. There is a simple process used to determine the factors. You have to multiply the load current (amperes) by the load voltage for single phase. For example if the load is 40 amperes like in a motor, and the secondary voltage is 240 volts, then 240 multiplied by 40 will give 9600 VA.A 10 KVA (10,000 volt-amperes) transformer is required.

It is better suggested to select the transformer larger than the actual load. This would allow expansion and is meant for safety purposes. If it is 3 phase KVA multiply rated volts x load amps x 1.73 (square root of 3) then divide by 1000. If you are going to design the power distribution for an entire building, then you must select the service transformer and distribution transformer.

It is also important to determine the incoming electric transformers voltage. 50 Hz, 60Hz and 400 Hz are the three common frequencies available. For high powered applications like aerospace technologies, the 400 Hz is reserved. When evaluating transformers, it is also important to consider the secondary power specifications. There are some other specifications that have to be kept in mind while selecting an electric transformer include the maximum ratings of secondary current and voltage rating, power and output rating. According to phase an connections, the power transformers have various configurations. Single phase and three-phase are most commonly used ones. Depending upon the number of primary windings in proportion, both the sizes and expense of electric transformers would increase.

You must also take essential care in the maintenance of the custom transformers. If the transformer has to be located at harsh environments, whether indoors or outdoors; it is important that the core/coil, leads, and Accessories should be adequately protected.
